This book takes us on a journey, along with Harriet, as she leaves her sheltered life in London to join a touring ballet company as they I was almost certain that I had found swahs favourite Ibbotson novel when I read Magic Flutes, but then A Company of Swans came along and proved me wrong.
Asininely pleased at being a ruined woman? It comes as no surprise then that when Dubrov selects Harriet out of all the girls, she’d willing defy her father’s wishes to join them in South America. I honestly thought she wrote just stories with magical elements in them and the covers I have on the shelf are cutesy-cutesy. Her fiction for adults includes three other enjoyable novels that qualify as romances — A Countess Below StairsThe Morning Giftand Magic Flutes — as well as the somewhat less qualified Madensky Square and a book of short stories.

It just isn’t believable. Harriet and Rom were destined to be soulmates. My aim is to produce books that are light, humorous, even a little erudite, but secure in their happy endings. She was an insipid, sweet fairy-tale heroine for most of the book.
Evidently writers find that the whole mysterious, moody hero meets naive and vulernable heroine in an over-sentimentalized plot sells quite well in the mass market. If you look past the age gap, this is quite a sweet story.
And, as with Cinderella, Harriet is offered the opportunity to dance her way out of her constricted life, when a Russian impresario visits the ballet class she attends and asks her to join his troupe, which is heading for the Amazon. The book had been in her head for years before she actually wrote it.
There’s only so many ground-breaking, out-of-your-box books you can read consecutively.
