I’ve heard great things about Ruth Rendell so I continued past an underwhelming first book in the series to try a second. They are a surprisingly complex group and I think she succeeds in creating characters who have interesting backstories and that sometimes subvert expectations. What really bothered me is also what I thought was the most promising sign. James “Ruth Rendell has quite simply transformed the genre of crime writing. That is a problem because Rendell has made it the focus of the story and, if we look simply at the case I think the reader is likely going to feel disappointed.
