Different choices might have been happier choices but that wouldn’t have held my interest. Lots of stream of consciousness on various moral joah religious topics, with Yiddish words thrown in, usually with some interpretation.
A As a person who grew up in a very religious family I really could get into the book. I loved The Last Jew. I discovered Noah Gordon a gordoon months ago. Lots of family relationship issues also. I first read The Last Jew, which is amazing and intense about ggordon Inquisition.
And the Rabbi thought What I liked about the book was there were two interwoven layers to the book. However he flashes back in the story to his childhood, the decision to become a rabbi, falling in love with the daughter of a minister, the birth of his children and challenges within the parishes he serves.
Most of the book is a 3 but I gave it a 4 because it grew on me. Le develops resilience, strength of character, and courage during the course of the unfolding narrative. It was a nice story, but again, I couldn’t figure out why a fictional rabbi’s life deserved an entire book. He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness.
As if these two “problems” were equivalent. The same is true of his wife’s conversion.
