Obviously, these don’t need to be read in order to be enjoyed or followed. The leads from Lord of Scoundrels appear as secondary characters in this book – Dain is a close friend of Vere apparently.
Bertie is a little slow on the uptake. I originally read this book about six-years ago and have re-read it every couple of years since.

She would like him to get his big, lorehta carcass out of her way so that she can carry on with her work. The Last Hellion was a disappointing read for me. What a nice surprise! I just wished there hadn’t been so many things that happened. She’s lost her mother and sister at a young age and her father was a worthless scoundrel, a drunkard and a third-rate actor that’d even been in prison for debt, before abandoning his daughter.
One person found this helpful. Her characterisations of all the principals and main secondary characters are excellent and very well defined; Ainswood and Dain are easy to tell apart as are Lydia and Jessica, and Bertie Trent sounds just as sweetly bluff and slightly bewildered as he ever did. This book also takes place somewhat simultaneously with LoS, as the Dain and Jessica are seen in the later part of the story, as married 6 months or so chass.
The heroine lost her young sister to tuberculosis and the hero his young ward to diphtheria. In this case, all of Vere’s family, all the people he cared about, died one by one, resulting to him becoming the Duke of Ainswood.
Most are good, some villainous, all are well-fleshed out and fun to encounter. He is so completely different from the type of guys Vere usually hangs out with that it made him the perfect foil.

No, she just wants it that way. Yah, that’s right, no missish slap or tap; a solid punch! It was great to read about Jessica and Dain again. In her teenage years, she continue to write letters, keep a helluon, write poetry and even attempt the Great American Novel still unfinished. The Last Hellion had a sizable cast of secondary ooretta. The sarcastic wit that they employ in their bantering was pure genius, and it also built some excellent sexual tension between the pair.

Too bad, because like any other LC’s books that I’ve read, this one also had some captivating moments. But the thriller byplay is allowed to somewhat overshadow the romance — probably to fatten teh the book but it was more an irritant than a genuinely enthralling suspense.
However, Lydia has never been a part of the Ballister family, because her mother was essentially disowned when she married Lydia’s father. He does care though, and deeply, he has become The Duke of Ainswood by default as a result of a series of deaths hellipn the Mallory family, not least 9 year old Robin, whom he loved and cared for after the death of Robin’s Father. If you read The Last Hellion, I hope you enjoy it.
Neither of them wants to desire the other lsat all, let alone with such intensity, and they fight their fascination with each other every step of the way. D Chase lroetta right up there with Kleypas, Enoch and Quinn in my opinion. At the same time, he, a man who apparently completely disrespects women- and Chase rather alarmingly repeats this fact, so that I was struggling to find anything likeable about him at all- falls hard for this Amazon and is forced to question all his assumptions.
The tale barrels along and it’s a fun ride. Vere has a pair of errant young wards, Elizabeth and Emily, who share their cousin’s penchant for getting into trouble. Both Vere and Grenville are energetic, larger-than-life characters.
It seems to me that when writing the previous book, Ms.
